I think I have mumps.

My neck feels about three times its normal size. It’s weirding me out.
Anyway. Last weekend Ted took me to see the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, which was fantastic. Definitely the coolest concert I’ve ever been to. That weekend I also spent a lot of time with some Rendezvous friends from PA who were at the Konczals to hunt. John, who is eighteen and a homeschooled Christian senior, and I became quite good chums.

Sunday we got new hymnals at church. Apparently another Evangelical Covenant church gave them to us. I was crestfallen when my pastor (whom I love dearly) said that the books were to be called, “worshipbooks” instead of hymnals, because they contained more contemporary music and scriptural responses. Why does everyone have to treat hymns and ‘worship music’ as entirely different things? It makes me very sad.
One of the first songs was “As the Deer.” I happen to like this song, and though my pastor has changed “thee” to “you” I have persisted in singing thee out of stubborn respect for the older words. Well, when I discovered the song in our new ‘worshipbook,’ the words had been changed by someone or other with apparent disregard for theology:
“As the deer pants for living water so my soul longs after You,” instead of “As the deer panteth for the water so my soul longeth after Thee.” I was disgusted! If you’re going to change the words, at least try to retain the meaning. The deer doesn’t want living water, doofus, it’s an analogy. The deer wants normal water. Something nice and cool and refreshing to drink. We, like the deer, want the life Jesus offers us, the living water.

Aside from that, the book isn’t actually too bad. The contemporary music is older contemporary music, tried and true songs like “Great is the Lord” and “Majesty.”

I haven’t got a lot else to say. I’ve been working on a set of Regency short stays from Jennie Chancey’s patterns, which is really exciting. I’ve run into a bit of a stick, because I’m not good at hand-sewn eyelets yet and I have to do eight, but hopefully I can get around that soon!
